Module selection for gas appliances: B, C2, D, E, F and G

Which conformity assessment module applies in which case under (EU) 2016/426?

Modules have two stages

For series-produced gas appliances, the design is assessed first (Module B), and conformity of production with the approved type is then ensured by a production-stage module (C2, D, E or F). For single products or very small series, Module G may be applied; this module does not require Module B as a prerequisite.

Module B: EU-type examination

The technical file is examined; the sample is inspected and tested against the essential requirements of the Regulation and the product-specific harmonised standards. If the outcome is positive, an EU-type examination certificate is issued. Modifications to the approved type that may affect conformity are subject to additional approval.

Production-stage modules

ModuleBasisRole of the notified body
C2Internal production control plus supervised product checks at random intervalsSelects samples, inspects and tests them during unannounced visits
DQuality assurance of the production processAssesses the quality system and carries out surveillance at least once a year
EProduct quality assuranceAssesses the quality system covering final product inspection and testing
FProduct verificationInspects products individually or on a statistical basis

Module G: unit verification

Each product is verified individually; all necessary tests are carried out on that product, and no sampling or statistical method is applied. The certificate is valid only for the verified product; therefore no surveillance is provided for.

The choice of module is evaluated jointly at the application stage according to production volume, the manufacturer's quality system and the nature of the product.
